“Coming through!” Riley shouted as she kicked off the ground, urging her hoverboard to go faster down the sidewalk. A grin tugged at the corner of her mouth as the denizens of this futuristic city glanced over their shoulders before scattering to get out of her way. Maybe trying out this hoverboard thing in the middle of a crowded city wasn’t the best idea, but it would take forever to find someplace that was suitable. Besides, these people were really just fragments of a dream anyways, so it wasn’t as if she was actually inconveniencing anyone. Skateboarding had never really been her thing. Riley had tried it a few times years ago, but it hadn’t been interesting enough to actually devote time and attention to gaining any real skill at it. Hoverboards were a different story. Using one wasn’t quite as enjoyable as actual flight since she could only go so high, but even the slight space between her board and the pavement below was thrilling. It helped that hoverboarding seemed much easier than skateboarding, though Riley wasn’t sure if she was simply better at it since she was dreaming or if the sport was actually easier. She cut around an older man who hadn’t been able to get out of her way quick enough and spotted an empty bench ahead. Riley sped up as she approached and jumped the board onto the bench. At the edge of the bench she jumped again, using the additional height to reach down and grab the end of her board for a second before straightening for the landing. Her grin widened as she landed successfully, but the move had been rather simple. Maybe it was time to try something a little more complex. It took her a minute before she spotted another bench that she could use. This time when she hopped off the end of the bench she shifted her weight to the back of the board and attempted to spin completely around. Riley managed the complete spin, but as she came down for the landing her foot slipped off the board. She lurched forward and the hoverboard shot out from under her remaining foot, leaving Riley to crash unceremoniously to the ground. Wincing, she pushed herself upright and tried to figure out where her board had gone. It seemed that even in a dream world things had a learning curve. Such a fall was somewhat embarrassing though, even if all the witnesses weren’t real. Of course it would be just her luck if another dream walker or something even worse had just managed to see Riley humiliate herself. | |
