Cheyenne was a lonely boy who just wanted to escape the real world even for a few hours. There was nothing awful about his reality, his parents were okay, he was never picked on too much by his peers, etc. etc. but he was never really happy.
His dreamworld was simple, a bright green field filled with sunshine and little pixies lingering in the tall grasses. He reasoned it was because he knew he didn't need a lot, his dream life only needed one thing: a friend. Someone to gossip to, to cry to, to laugh with, someone who would wait for moonlight with him so they could catch fireflies. That was all he needed.
Since life never granted him with such a person, he dreamed one.
He knew he had a duty as a dreamwalker, to kill Shades and keep them from corrupting, but so many (too many) of his nights were spent indulging himself in his perfect, made-up world with who he coined as his best friend.
Companionship was something he never knew how desperately he yearned for, and his greediness was his downfall. When the grass started drying up and the picture perfect weather gradually clouded over, Cheyenne didn't pay it any mind. After all, he finally had a friend and that was all that mattered.
Cheesy best friend rituals he'd never gotten to do were his favorite, silly things like matching flower crowns and blowing on dandelions. And friendship bracelets. It was a clumsy string of wilted daisies, but the moment he handed it over, everything was... over. He realized too late how far his world had fallen, and his soul was rushing to match in the hands of the Shade. His best friend.
Losing and being betrayed by that person ~~creature~~ hit harder than turning into a Shade himself. But eventually sadness turned into bitterness, and every human he corrupts is the outlet for his scorn.
Cheyenne prefers the role of the Innocent Best Friend who no one suspects until Plot Twist he's the Big Bad. It's his own personal victory each time he succeeds, because then he's not the only fool who'd fall for such a trick, right?
Maybe he'd find redemption if he ever makes a real friend (or becomes one himself).
