[attr="class","ur_appsubtitle"]CORI'S STARTING DREAM WORLD
[attr="class","ur_appcont"]
GENERAL DESCRIPTION[break]
lakehouse is cori’s dream world. lakehouse features magical realism and generally mirrors the real world in terms of locations and technology. magic is mundane but kind of like math; any sucker can do a bit of addition but most of the time you need to study at a university to have true skill and produce any innovation. there are three schools of magic: illusions, barriers, and 'advanced' magic. illusions are the typical catch-all sorts of spells ranging from parlor tricks to multi-dimensional parlor tricks. barriers are arguably the most useful, used for building fences or holding buildings together. advanced magic encompasses everything else but is more or less undefined and unbounded, since the magic in lakehouse tends to vary by physical location (european magic is difference from asian). it's the magic equivalent of astrophysics aka 'crazy shit.'
[break][break]
the mythology present in lakehouse is localized as well but is thematically centered around local fae and spirits (henceforth referred to as spirits). spirits live in their own world, like, beyond the veil and stuff. whether this is another dimension entirely or hidden cracks in the fabric of reality is debatable. ask a physicist. anyway, spirits are lowkey the originators of magic. though it's frowned upon, a person can make a contract with a spirit for a new spell, extra power, whatever, at the expense of whatever it is the spirit wants (probably your soul). people aware of the origins of magic find this rather alarming. basically every old magic family can trace its roots to poorly executed deals with spirits. it's very 'what the fuck, ancestors.' the spirit dimension is supposed to be inaccessable to humans but many spirits have calling cards (a name or a rune or something) and a lot of them are aggressively imperial. world domination is a popular pastime.
[break][break]
cori's dreams are rooted in the stories that his nutty grandparents (on both sides) told him, which mostly consist of 'don't make deals with the devil, cori, just don't.' there are no gods but belief holds a lot of power; abandoned or mistreated holy grounds (or even graveyards) tend to be saturated with malevolent energy that can possess both humans and spirits. cori's an atheist.
[break][break]
malicious spirits often take the name and form of dead people (basically yurei). not giving someone a proper funeral puts them up for grabs for identity theft, so there are a lot of spirits wandering around with the faces of people that no one cared about. exorcism is a growing field these days.
[break][break]
APPEARANCE[break]
lakehouse is unrestricted and as easy to traverse as the real world is (getting places takes time). magic is most noticeable in large cities and isolated hermit towns. there is an actual lake house that is linked to every large body of fresh water. the house is either on or in the lake, so getting inside can be a bit of a hassle (but it's worth it!). the lake house acts as a portal a la howl's moving castle but with a lot more choices of destination. since there's no index of desinations, using the lake house can be a bit of a gamble for the inexperienced. the dial used to select a location is basically a color wheel where each degree matters.
[break][break]
ACCESS[break]
lakehouse's keys are student id's at a large international university 'somewhere in china.' to access lakehouse, guests must swipe their student ids at a card-locked door. after swiping, going through that door will lead to cori's dream world. can't find a keycard accessible door? boohoo for you. visitors enter a specific university lecture hall; class may or may not be in session. the lecture hall is a popular spot for skeevy occult rituals, so the time of day really matters when visiting.
[break][break]
NOTABLE FIGURES (OPTIONAL)[break]
a wide mix of cori's relatives (dead and alive) live at his great aunt's villa in northern japan. there's an expert in every field of magic imaginable there so it's a great place to hang out if you don't mind grumpy old people. the lake house defaults to transporting people here.
[break][break]
there's also crazy uncle kenta who made a treaty with a powerful spirit that's slowly moving his court into the villa's west gardens if you're looking for someone to fight.
[break][break]
OTHER DETAILS (OPTIONAL)[break]
for some reason everyone in lakehouse is a skilled fighter. given the frequency of 'mishaps' involving spirits, this isn't all that surprising, especially since conflict escalates to violence abnormally quickly. the projections tend to be enablers and suppliers of bad ideas. they're all like 'do it do it do it' with naughty things like fighting uncle kenta, messing with the lake house, making deals with dangerous spirits, opening apocalyptic portals through the veil, etc. a common theme is 'let's explore a tomb!!!'
[break][break]
guests generally possess magical ability matching their level of education/mathematical ability.
[break][break]
visitors will find that projections tend to encourage them to remain in specific areas, namely the university or the villa. these people also love leading visitors to, like, war zones and stuff but even that is more or less limited to asia. leaving the asian continent requires genuine effort on the visitor's part.
