- Miguel was raised by his father Eduardo alongside his siblings in rural Spain after his mom died giving birth to him.
[break] [break] - The simple and hard farm life taught Miguel the value of hard work, especially when his older siblings foisted off the work on him once he was old enough. It also gave him an adventurous streak a mile wide as he explored everywhere he could.
[break] [break] - Being unable to support all of his kids with his income on the farm, Eduardo reluctantly agreed to have two of his children go with their maternal uncle Andrei and work with him in the travelling Cirque de Plume. The only willing ones were his second child, the eighteen year-old Gabriel, and his youngest, the ten year-old Miguel, so they were the ones who went despite the misgivings of the rest of the family.
[break] [break] - Dreams were nothing like the real deal, and this was no different. Life was hard in the circus, but once they adjusted to their harsh new environment Gabriel and Miguel did well. Over the years, they transitioned from being their gophers to actually performing in the acts – Miguel on the high wire and trapeze while Gabriel was a lion tamer.
[break] [break] - Their lifestyles steadily became more dangerous as they aged, only in a direction that they didn’t expect. In Miguel’s teens, Le Claire and their uncle Andrei let them into the darker world behind the circus. They were reluctant but pressure from the rest forced them to go along and become part of this darker world as thieves and conmen.
[break] [break] - After one too many failed errands for Le Claire, their uncle Andrei was killed with Gabriel unknowingly witnessing Le Claire giving the order for the murder. This triggers a series of events wherein they try to sneak off and escape from Le Claire, only for it to end with Gabriel dying in order for a wounded Miguel to escape into the mountainous wilderness of Italy.
[break] [break] - Miguel is hunted down by Le Claire’s men in the wilderness, with his only comfort being the dream world. At that point it was so tempting to just give up and stay in the other world and let his pursuers kill him, but he promised his brother not to die. As such, he continued to run until he is saved by a mysterious stranger named Michelangelo.
[break] [break] - Michelangelo and his associates host Miguel in a home somewhere in the mountains of Italy. Eventually Miguel confesses to what happened and expects to be arrested or worse. Instead, he is offered a place in Michelangelo’s mafia and accepts.
[break] [break] - Miguel’s dreamwalker abilities awaken during this time. At first, the dream world is nothing but a place where he can rest and talk to others without the mafia breathing down his neck or the stigma of being a criminal hanging over his head. However, then he accidentally manages to spy a shade doing their work and gets a crazy idea. What was it? Helping shades to do their dirty work and keep suspicion off of them and in turn they help him with his targets. But that’s not all. He also manipulated the normal folk into killing the shades his targets turned into if he didn’t choose to do the deed for himself. Surprisingly, the crazy idea worked.
[break] [break] - This idea, amongst a few others, started his meteoric rise to power. The dream world proved to be his trump card as it not only allowed him to do that but a lot of other things as well including limited espionage.
[break] [break] - Soon, he was able to take control of the mafia after Michelangelo was murdered by a rival mafia, via blackmail, murder, and trickery. He then crushed Le Claire’s criminal operation with the unwitting assistance of the police before turning his eyes to expanding the criminal gang he had inherited into an empire.
[break] [break] - The empire was a dream he would never attain. The power had gone to his head and he got cocky to the point where he went out with few if any at all bodyguards. That proved to be his undoing when he mistakenly protects a girl by himself at night and ends up going into a coma due to an unknown assailant.
[break] [break] - Miguel became stuck in the dream world during his coma. At first, he attempted to continue ruling his empire while in a coma through the use of the shades he had ‘befriended’ and the dreams of nearby dream walkers. Unfortunately some of the shades and dream walkers became tired of being used this way and sought out their revenge in the most ironic way possible – turning him into a shade and killing him off in the dream world.
[break] [break] - They partially succeeded by tricking Miguel into a shade. However, they were outwitted into killing themselves or being murdered one way or another by Miguel as retaliation. He was helped by a few ‘friends’ he convinced he was in the right or turned into other creatures like him like a certain one-eyed redhead.
[break] [break] - Miguel then tried a way to reverse the process that made him into a shade but ended up with either cryptic hints or dead ends. Eventually, he gave up on ever getting back to his body and coming out of what is most likely a coma and instead decided to revel in this world.
[break] [break] - In what seemed like no time at all, he managed to start up a mafia of his own, this time composed of shades and even a few dream walkers that were dedicated to him and his ‘cause’. He made bases anywhere, but no one knew where his real base lay. In truth, it was in a maze of an unknown person’s dream world, but no one would care if one more unknown wandered in a few more times than was normal, right?
[break] [break] - Miguel is a mafia don called in both real world Italy and in the dream world as The Godfather by his members. As such, he rarely ever gets his hand dirty with converting a dream walker into a shade and instead lets his members do most of the conversions. Instead, he simply toys with potential victims and opens them up for his members to go for the kill.
[break] [break]
There have been occasions where a dream walker has been interesting enough for him to convert personally. His personal preferred method is befriending and slow coercion until they willingly show him their soul for him to take. Of course, he isn’t above deceit and more to get what he wants. Almost nothing is too foul or heinous for this man.
[break] [break]
However, he does leave some dream walkers unchanged because they are more useful as they are. Those dream walkers are considered to be under his protection and are not to be converted. They are few and far in between but they are usually considered to be more useful than a regular shade in his service.
